Somatic Experiencing

Somatic experiencing (SE) is a body-focused approach to healing. Here we work with your body, nervous system and your inner self to support you to find safety within yourself. Your nervous system effects every part of your body, every organ, every sensation. The nervous system also houses a tremendous power designed to protect you. This power can express in the fight or flight response, and it can also get trapped in a freeze response. It can cycle between fight/flight and freeze for some people, not finding a safe place to land, and one can feel isolated, anxious and stuck.

With somatic experiencing we aim to support you and the energy in your nervous system to find its way back to a felt sense of safety gradually and with care. Sometimes this first means the body needs to express this energy in a meaningful way, and so the body receives the message that it is effective now, in the present moment, and it is now safe to let go of the adrenaline, the fight/flight, to deactivate and to rest.

The understanding of how the nervous system and body works that we now have is helpful to address deeply distressed sensations we can have. Thanks to pioneers in the field including but not limited to Dr. Peter A. Levine Ph.D., Dr. Stephen W. Porges Ph.D. and many more researchers, clinicians and educators, thousands of people have been supported in safe embodied processing of trauma and levels of distress that need more than solely a cognitive approach to make meaningful shifts.
